Georgetown, Guyana — The editorial team awaits Ralph Ramkarran’s clarification of his Nov 26, 2018 Stabroek News article where he stated that the opposition would need 34 votes to pass the no confidence motion. It has come to our attention that this learned gentleman has now signaled that he made a ‘mistake’ but no official statement has been made and the nearly one month old article remains unedited.
One thing that is undisputed is the viral sharing of articles on this topic and the various discussions evoked have energized coalition supporters across the country. It is clear that the coalition is strong and that support is pervasive. People generally feel that Charrandass Persaud and the PPPC conspired to destabilize a duly elected government and they won’t let the PPPC get away with that. Jagdeo should be concerned.
We are unclear about whether the coalition will challenge the now widely accepted no confidence vote, they may very well appeal to the speaker for clarification, but it certainly does not preclude a motivated private citizen from bringing the case before the court, much in the same way Cecil Richardson brought Jagdeo’s third term case before the court.
Whatever the decision, the citizens of Guyana deserve a thorough review of this issue, it is their right. To all of the PPPC supporters who are currently in panic mode, I implore you not to resort to violence. The Guyana democracy is strong and can withstand an interrogation of the no-confidence process. All citizens should embrace this.
