Meddling Ambassadors And High Commissioners Have Picked A Side, Lost Credibility

Ambassadors and High Commissioners should not be interfering in an internal democratic process in Guyana. Over and over we see them attempting to influence the process with their words and actions but what is their standing in that room, in the process? Are they accredited observers? Are they really concerned about our country? If they are, they would remain outside of the process and then broker a resolution, instead, they have chosen a side, involved themselves in the process and yet they claim to be neutral arbiters.

Ambassadors must stand up for transparency and democracy from a higher perch and although many of them lack credibility to lecture Guyana considering the examples in their own home countries, it is even more disingenuous for them to be publicity seeking and biased, then claim to be speaking for democracy and good governance in Guyana.

Once again we ask, were they accredited observers? We want to remind them that they are losing credibility with 1/2 of the country. 1/2 of the country does not believe you, neither do they want to listen and hear from you. What is your role and function in this society? Whose interests are you promoting long term?

It is instructive to consider former President Jimmy Carter’s humble approach. He was very tactical and he was never arrogant, dismissive or biased which was why he was able to get everyone to buy into his program. He met with then President Hoyte multiple times and often times behind the scenes, and he did the unbiased work to build credibility with both sides in a way that our current ambassadors have spectacularly failed.
